Abstract
⺠Brunfelsia (Solanaceae) has half its species in the Antilles, half in South America. ⺠A molecular phylogeny and chronogram reveal that Brunfelsia dates back to the Miocene. ⺠It originated in South America and reached the Antilles early during its evolution. ⺠There are Brunfelsia radiations on Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. ⺠The Cuban radiation includes 11 species that arose just 4 million years ago.
