Abstract
⺠Molecular phylogenies for mitochondrial and nuclear genes are used to assess differentiation among species and the phylogeny of South American catfshes in the genus Pseudoplatystoma. ⺠Genetic divergence and coalescent analysis suggest the existence of four rather than eight putative species in this genus. ⺠The trans-Andean species Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum is placed as the sister species in this clade.
