► Out of 350 species of damselfishes, brood care evolved only once in just three species. ► Species with brood care, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Altrichthys azurelineatus, and A. curatus. All three species live in a small area of the western Philippines. ► Brood may have originated in that region.
