Abstract
► The stability of pigmentation of median cells in Pestalotiopsis spores was evaluated. ► Cultural studies were performed and DNA sequence data were analysed phylogenetically. ► Results indicated that pigmentation is a reliable phylogenetic marker. ► A new colour scheme is proposed as an aid in Pestalotiopsis taxonomy. ► Species with knobbed apical appendages do not constitute a monophyletic lineage.
