► Nutrient reserves decrease during pharate 1st instar quiescence in Aedes aegypti. ► Duration of pharate 1st instar quiescence negatively affects subsequent larval fitness. ► An extended quiescence period decreases metallothionein mRNA levels and compromises metal tolerance physiology.
