Occurrence of two different species of mitoviruses in the European race of Gremmeniella abietina var. abietina, both hosted by the genetically unique Spanish population

► The Gremmeniella complex is studied through their mitoviruses for the first time. ► The ideas about the origin of the Spanish G. abietina were reinforced with new information. ► Spanish G. abietina harbours mitoviruses occurring in both biotype A and B. ► This is the first report on distantly related mycoviruses occur in one population of G. abietina.
