Abstract
⺠We analyze the conservation performance of common reserve selection models. ⺠We introduce a performance measure based on relative return on investment. ⺠We show that the use of many low-level targets reduces high-level performance. ⺠This result should influence the way targets are viewed in conservation planning. ⺠A novel framework is introduced which combines target- and utility-based models.
