An individual-based process model to simulate landscape-scale forest ecosystem dynamics

► We present an approach to model individual-tree competition at landscape scales. ► Our model integrates competition for and physiological utilization of resources. ► Simulated productivity and mortality match a wide range of observations well. ► The new model is able to simulate plantations as well as complex old-growth forests. ► Computing time increases only linearly with landscape extent.
