Abstract
► High mortality of live retention trees illustrates conflicting conservation goals. ► The fallen trunks and snags of those trees are valuable for wood-dwelling fungi. ► Species rich substrates are large fallen aspens (polypores) and pine snags (lichens). ► Simple tree-selection criteria are sufficient for common species only. ► Managing for multiple conservation goals should include focal species approach.
