Abstract
⺠Wealth, not poverty, drove deforestation where forest boundaries were insecure. ⺠Good coffee prices did not always lead to forest encroachment. ⺠Collaborative management was associated with better forest recovery. ⺠Forest loss and recovery depend on policy, markets, local and national governance. ⺠Contexts rather than drivers determine the opportunities for forest conservation.
