Abstract
► We compare current and historic geographic range size as extinction risk predictors. ► Current range size strongly predicts risk while historic range size does not. ► Latent extinction risk is underestimated from models based on current range size. ► Current range size as a predictor of species decline rates suffers from circularity. ► Small range size is not inherently linked with rapid rates of decline.
