► We studied clonal and genetic diversity of a shrubby riparian softwood species. ► Large numbers of clones were only detected in the floodplain in front of the dykes. ► Genetic patterns showed a continuous population despite highly fragmented stands. ► Management advice is given for selecting suitable planting material for restoration.
