Abstract
► Reserve design for Cape Verde reptiles was optimized considering genetic diversity. ► Targeting ESUs was more effective in protecting diversity than targeting species. ► An unexpected similar nr of PUs was selected by realistic and ideal cost scenarios. ► Work contributes for local conservation planning and applies to other island systems.
