Abstract
⺠Target-based planning is an integral component of systematic conservation planning. ⺠Strict targets are given to many small components of biodiversity. ⺠The use of many targets may lead to lower mean protection levels. ⺠We empirically compared target-based planning to alternative approaches. ⺠Less prescriptive alternatives achieved higher overall conservation performance.
