Abstract
► A weakly beneficial mutant can take over slower than a neutral one (slowdown). ► We link slowdown to the sojourn times in intermediate states.► Fixation time in a small population can be non-monotonic with selection strength. ► We identify generic classes of 2×2 evolutionary games that are non-monotonic.
