Abstract
► This is a computational study of interactions between calcium homeostasis and mechanical stimulation at the level of a single osteocyte. ► Hydraulic pressure governs the canalicular fluid flow. ► Calcium fluxes generate osmotic currents near the canalicular walls and the cell membrane. ► Shear stress experienced by osteocytes is affected by mechanical loading and by disbalance in calcium homeostasis. ► Calcium homeostasis state (such as osteopenia) may affect bone responsiveness to mechanical forces.
