Abstract
⺠We consider evolutionary dynamics of two competing types in a finite population. ⺠The population is divided into demes. ⺠We derive a simple criterion to determine which type is favored by selection. ⺠The Pareto efficient type is favored when competition in demes is weak. ⺠For the prisoner's dilemma game we explain how deme structure facilitates cooperation.
