► Impact of three biocontrol pseudomonads on root defense induction in two wheat cultivars. ► Fifteen defense gene homologues representing four plant stress/defense pathways. ► DAPG and the T3SS per se were not essential for root defense induction. ► Cultivar-dependent gene induction was observed for all pseudomonad strains.
