► The APSIM model assumes constant kl across maize plant populations. ► We tested the hypothesis in the field across three maize populations. ► kl (maximum soil water extraction rate) declined linearly with plant density. ► Crop lower limit did not vary between plant populations. ► Incorrect model parameter use caused over-prediction of grain yield.
