Abstract
⺠We review knowledge of the influence of chilling during dormancy. ⺠Physiological, biochemical and molecular dormancy studies are integrated. ⺠Low temperature requirements during dormancy and bud breaking are described. ⺠Climate records show UK winter chill has declined and will continue to decline. ⺠Mitigation strategies such as the development of novel germplasm are outlined.
