Abstract
⺠24 variables were identified in the literature to differentiate informal from formal neighborhoods in developing countries. ⺠Analysis shows only 7 variables were required for settlement type differentiation using data from Guatemala. ⺠Only VHR satellite imagery and elevation data were required to measure settlement differences -- field surveys were not needed. ⺠Results may be applicable to Latin American countries or other developing nations lacking small-scale field survey data.
