Abstract
► We investigate patterns of tree mortality for two co-occurring Nothofagus species. ► Between species, we found different spatial and size-related patterns of mortality. ► Slower growing trees were likely to die, as were Nothofagus fusca growing in previously disturbed stands. ► We demonstrate that performance differences between species can be manifested spatially.
