► An ion-beam treatment has been employed to modify pore structures of electrodes. ► The etching of surplus ionomer turns catalyst layers highly rough and porous. ► Modification results in a substantial improvement of mass-transport processes. ► The ion-beam-treated MEAs exhibit improved performance for the DMFC.
