► Local degradation of a long-term operated DMFC MEA is analyzed. ► Anode and cathode losses via reference electrode measurements are separated. ► Relaxation behaviour after CI are correlated with methanol crossover/CO poisoning. ► Degradation is not correlated with the flow field pattern.
