Abstract
► We show a direct formate fuel cell using an alkaline polymer electrolyte membrane. ► This fuel cell produces power density competitive with existing liquid fuel cells. ► The alkaline environment is advantageous for catalysts and reaction rates. ► Formate oxidizes at a faster rate and lower potential than ethanol or formic acid.
