► Novel green method to prepare graphene for supercapacitors without hazardous reducing agents. ► An alkaline deoxygenation route was developed to fabricate binder-free, flexible electrodes. ► Electrochemical properties of paper electrodes show high power and energy densities. ► This method to prepare graphene from graphene oxide may facilitate energy storage applications.
