► Effects of current collector on performance of Li4Ti5O12 were investigated. ► Al and Cu current collectors with or without carbon coating have been tested. ► High-temperature carbon coating removes surface oxide. ► High-temperature coating changes surface hydrophobicity. ► Performance of LTO exhibits remarkable enhancement by C-coating on both metals.
