Abstract
⺠Oxygen-tolerant, oxygen-sensitive, and other nonstandard [NiFe] hydrogenases employ very similar active sites for catalysis. ⺠Unusual iron-sulfur clusters that undergo two redox transitions are correlated to oxygen tolerance. ⺠Understanding the mechanisms of oxygen tolerance and catalytic bias will enable development of biotechnological devices.
