Abstract
► P-cluster is generated through the reductive coupling of two 4Fe clusters. ► M-cluster is synthesized by forming an [Fe8S9] core before Mo/homocitrate insertion. ► Formation of the [Fe8S9] core from two [Fe4S4] sub-clusters relies on radical SAM. ► SAM serves as the carbon donor for the interstitial carbide in M-cluster. ► NifEN and NifDK share a common cluster insertion path for M-cluster assembly.
