► Chlorogenic acid is transesterified when extracted from mycorrhizal tomato roots. ► This transesterification into methyl caffeate is an enzyme-catalysed reaction. ► The enzyme catalysing this reaction is inhibited by phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride.
