Abstract
► The quality of DOM is important in determining its fate in forest ecosystems. ► Proteins and sugars represent a sizeable fraction of DOM from root and leaf litter. ► DOM from root litter may be more likely to contribute to soil organic matter. ► A large portion of the soluble N and P in fine roots is likely to be rapidly recycled. ► Results highlight importance of DOM from root litter to C and nutrient cycling.
