Abstract
► We investigated microbial dynamics for respiration pulse induced by rewetting dry soil. ► Further, we studied how the history of drought modulated this response. ► Drought slowed responses to rewetting. ► A history of drought decreased C loss, while bacterial growth was unaffected. ► A history of drought thus stimulated bacterial growth efficiency.
