Abstract
⺠We applied a range of gamma irradiation doses to intact soil cores. ⺠Free-living nematodes were eliminated by a 5 kGy dose. ⺠Nitrification was inhibited beyond 10 kGy, ammonium release was complex. ⺠Microbial biomass C decreased beyond 10 kGy and was below detection at 40 kGy. ⺠Phospholipid fatty acids unexpectedly persisted even in sterile soil.
