Abstract
⺠Extramatrical mycelia of ectomycorrhizal fungi are potentially large C sinks in soil. ⺠I review the spatial and temporal scales over which they moderate carbon dynamics. ⺠Some components of extramatrical mycelia probably turn over within a few weeks. ⺠The influence of future climate change on these processes is also considered.
