Abstract
► Growth and survival of the Senegalese sole reveal deficiencies. Stress might explain this issue. ► Fish physiology is negatively affected by high stocking density or low water replacement. ► After stressing fish, a stress-related response appears to be initiated at the hypothalamus. ► Melatonin counteracts several stress-induced effects, such as cortisol synthesis and release. ► The present results are in support of an anti-stress role for melatonin in Senegalese sole.
