Strategies for the supply of crude glycerin for kids in pre-slaughter lairage

The objective was to evaluate the physiological parameters, carcass, and meat characteristics of kids fed crude glycerin (Gly) in pre-slaughter lairage. Kids were grouped into the following treatments: Control - received no Gly; GlyGly - received Gly in feedlot and pre-slaughter lairage; GlyW - received Gly only in feedlot; WGly - received Gly only in pre-slaughter lairage. GlyGly animals had lower blood concentrations of cortisol and urea. Control animals had higher blood concentrations of albumin, indicative of less hydration. The treatments did not influence the carcass and meat characteristics (pH, weight and yield, cut yield, color, water-holding capacity and texture). Gly supply to kids did not result in increased concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, V, Ba, Sr, Se, Zn, Cu, Mn, Al, and Fe). Gly supply to kids in pre-slaughter reduces plasma concentrations of stress indicators and does not alter carcass and meat characteristics.
