Abstract
Impact of Tagetes lucida herb alcoholic extract on regulation of hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and oxidative stress in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar male albino rats was targeted in this research. T. lucida extract was administered to the experimental rats at dose; 500 mg/kg/day orally for five weeks. The efficiency of extract to regulate hyperglycemia was evaluated in comparison with glibenclamid at its recommended dose (5 mg/kg/day orally). Recorded results indicated that T. lucida extract showed hypoglycemic activity presented as maintained body weight and significant reduction in blood glucose levels concurrence with remarkable increment in serum insulin levels. The extract exhibited hypolipidemic property pointed by significant good amendment on lipid profile lead to significant improvement in risk ratio. Anti-oxidative stress characters of extract was evaluated in liver and kidney antioxidant enzyme activities; catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase which were magnified in parallel with remarkable elevation on glutathione concentration comparable with diabetic control. Oppositely, oxidative stress markers; hydrogen-peroxide and malondialdehyde were significantly declined.
