Abstract
Metabolite transport not only allows the flawless coordination of pathways in different organelles and between cells, but it is also balances energy provision and utilisation throughout the whole plant. Plant metabolite transport displays enormous plasticity and flexible regulation. Focussing particularly on carbon transporters, this review discusses transport functions in source and sinks organs, with sucrose and trehalose in source-sink communication that encompasses sophisticated perception and signalling systems.180
