► Forager-aged honey bees had high intensity and prevalence of Nosema ceranae infection. ► Adult nurse bees exhibited lower levels of N. ceranae. ► N. ceranae was never found in recently-emerged adult honey bees. ► Individual infection prevalence correlated positively to sample infection intensity.
