Abstract

•Foodborne diseases, from 2000 to 2011 in Brazil, 51.8% of the outbreaks originated in the home.•Foodborne disease cases could be avoided if preventive behaviors were adopted the food production.•Studies have found that a large number of foodborne diseases originating in the home in Brazil.•Educational Program of good food manipulation practices in the home is a strategy for reducing of cases.

Food poisoning related to sanitary problems is among the most widespread illnesses in the world. The non-hygienic preparation and handling of food in households accounts for a large number of foodborne disease outbreaks. These outbreak cases could be avoided if preventive behaviors were adopted during food preparation. Educational actions offer a preventive information strategy for reducing the cases of foodborne diseases in households. Based on what was previously exposed, the purpose of this review was to describe the importance of good practices for food handling in Brazilian households.
