Abstract

Food research and bio-materials research in Canada is very active, especially at various academic organizations and government institutions. One of those academic organizations is the Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet, http://www.afmnet.ca/). AFMNet-funded researchers work along the scientific continuum from basic to applied research in a multidisciplinary manner and have a mission of producing commercially viable, socially acceptable, value-added products/processes that benefit all Canadians. AFMNet supports research in 4 research areas: Nanoscale science and technology Nano-science related to food and bio-materials; Food, nutrition, and health; Consumer attitudes and behaviour in conjunction with regulatory policy; and Traceability and authenticity of foods and food ingredients, through various grant programs. In addition, AFMNet has developed strong programs in: trainee development; knowledge translation and issues related to commercialization and intellectual property; communication strategies; and finally, global outreach and collaboration initiatives.
