Abstract
A company's overall new product performance depends on the following elements: the New Product Development (NPD) process; the organisation of the NPD programme; the NPD strategy; culture and climate for innovation; and senior management commitment to NPD. These elements are closely aligned to the framework for NPD improvement, developed by the author while managing the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute (later the Fonterra Research Centre). This framework was based on three key components – (1) Doing Things Right (process and practices); (2) Doing the Right Things (strategy); and (3) Measuring the Results (metrics).
