Abstract

•We investigate the impact of grocery shopping frequency on the healthfulness of food purchases.•We use food-purchase data from a panel of American households in the empirical analyses.•We find that shopping frequency has a negative and significant effect on healthfulness of food purchases.•We also find that consumers spend relatively more on temptation foods as they shop more frequently.
