•Nanoparticles based silver–silicon structures are illuminated and investigated.•External illumination affects the extinction cross-section resonance wavelength.•Raman scatter enhance the scattered electric field.
Three nanoparticle based structures are presented for the use of tunable surface enhanced Raman scattering effect. The tunability is obtained by change in the refractive index through illumination of silicon nanoparticles, and the result is a highly controllable enhancement factor and extinction cross section resonance wavelength. Intensity enhancements of up to 109 are demonstrated with induced modulation of enhancement of up to 48 dB for certain structures.
