Abstract
► A phenolic extraction of 21 commercial seaweed species has been guided to evaluate the photoprotective capacities of extracts. ► Most phenolic seaweed extracts displayed in vivo UVB-photoprotective effects. ► Extracts of Macrocystis pyrifera and Porphyra columbina showed the highest photoprotective efficacy. ► Carrageenophytes Sarcothalia radula and Gigartina skottsbergii showed valuable activities.
