► First report on the cytotoxicity of aloe-emodin (AE) in HK-2 cells. ► AE can induce apoptosis through G2/M phase arrest and caspase-3 activation. ► Endoplasmic reticulum stress is involved in AE-induced apoptosis. ► AE should be considered as a potential nephrotoxicant.
