Safety assessment of lutein and zeaxanthin (Lutemaxâ¢ 2020): Subchronic toxicity and mutagenicity studies

Abstract

âº Lutein/zeaxanthin was investigated for its acute, subchronic toxicity and mutagenic effects. âº In 90-day study, no adverse effects of lutein/zeaxanthin were noted at doses up to 400Â mg/kg/day. âº In Ames assay, no mutagenic effects of lutein and zeaxanthin preparation were noted. âº The No Observed-Adverse-Effect Level (NOAEL) for lutein/zeaxanthin was 400Â mg/kg bw/day.
