Abstract
⺠Benzocaine has been proposed as a sedative for immobilizing food producing finfish. ⺠Benzocaine is known to induce methemoglobinemia. ⺠We determined if orally administered benzocaine would induce methemoglobin in rats. ⺠The results suggest that eating benzocaine-treated fish will not cause methemoglobinemia.
