Abstract
► Sublethal stress conditions were determined for Arcobacter butzleri and Campylobacter jejuni. ► The bacteria were adapted to the sublethal stresses and exposed to further stress. ► Specific adaptive responses and cross-protective effects were evaluated. ► Heat stress induced cross-protection against lethal acid conditions in A. butzleri. ► Cross-protection of A. butzleri has not been previously reported.
