Abstract
► Biocontrol is a current strategy used to prevent aflatoxin contamination of crops. ► Genetic defects identified in Aspergillus flavus K49 ensure its safe application in fields. ► K49, AF36, and prospective TX9-8 biocontrol strains have a shared phylogeny. ► This biocontrol group consists of recombinant strains derived from specific ancestors. ► Biocontrol candidate strains can easily be selected from this non-aflatoxigenic group.
